What is STOKE certification?
STOKE stands for the “Sustainable Tourism and Outdoors Kit for Evaluation” and is the world's first sustainability certification designed for outdoor adventure destinations, resorts and events. With roots in surf and snow tourism, STOKE has certified over 30 members across nine countries so far, including big names like Tavarua Island Resort and the World Surf League. In addition, they’ve partnered with major organisations like Surfrider Foundation and Protect Our Winters to develop their standards.
So why choose a STOKE-certified resort or product? After nearly a decade of refining its certification model through close work with niche adventure tourism players, STOKE has created standards that are relevant, easy to use and meaningful. The STOKE team aims to help members showcase sustainability leadership to customers and create demand for sustainability from within the outdoors community.
The company's founders are committed environmentalists who also happen to be avid surfers and snowboarders. For them, these passions are intertwined. That's why STOKE created sustainability certifications for surf and mountain destinations - to help protect the natural playgrounds they love. With three certification levels - Certified, Sustainable and Best Practice - resorts can progress over time and follow on their sustainability journey.
Developed over three years in close collaboration with surf resorts, communities, nonprofits and officials, STOKE drew from the most respected global standards to create a comprehensive surf certification program. With 142 metrics across key impact areas—from surf resources to local economies—STOKE takes a 360-degree view of sustainability.
Each metric includes not just minimum expectations, but two additional tiers that show operators the next steps towards best practices. Flexibility is built in too. If certain metrics don't apply, the STOKE review board simply excludes them from scoring so resorts aren't penalised. The criteria evolve every two years, incorporating feedback from resorts, evaluators and the latest research. This ensures the benchmark stays meaningful.
STOKE's certifications are comprehensive, covering everything from community and culture to environment and economy. The goal is to get visitors excited about sustainability so they help safeguard these special places for future generations. When people protect the planet, they're protecting the sports and places that bring them joy.
